If you have the resources, you turn to technology, which is what a company in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates (阿联酋) (UAE for short) is planning to do. The country, which gets less than four inches of rain per year, could solve its issue with water shortage by dragging icebergs from Antarctica to its shores. The first such attempt will begin in 2018. Once the iceberg is at UAE shores, the ice above the waterline would be cut off and crushed into drinking water, which would then be stored in large water tanks. The iceberg would also have a broader impact, says Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi: “Cold air out from an iceberg close to the shore of the Arabian Sea would cause rainstorms across the Arabian Gulf and the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula all year round. As the rising air expands, cools and condenses (冷凝) due to the decrease in air pressure, water vapor (水蒸气) is collected in the clouds, which becomes heavy and falls as rain.” More icebergs will bring more water vapor and clouds, creating a profound (巨大的)effect on the regional climate over a decade, turning the desert into “green meadows(草地)”. The melting iceberg would also add fresh water to the Arabian sea, returning biodiversity. There would also be a boost(兴旺) for tourism from all the people interested in looking at the icebergs. The Emirates Iceberg Project comes from a group of efforts by NABL called “Filling the Empty Quarter”. The project aims to dramatically influence the deserts of the “Empty Quarter”, the planet’s largest sand desert. The region is also the richest oil-producing area in the world, including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE and Yemen. 1、What is the UAE planning to do according to the text? A.To collect fresh sea water from Antarctica. B.To drag icebergs from Antarctica to the country. C.To make icebergs from Antarctica melt. D.To get 20 billion gallons of fresh water from icebergs. 2、What Al Shehi said reflects the effect of icebergs on_______. A.the weather B.the industry C.the biodiversity D.the tourism 3、According to the text, the deserts of the “Empty Quarter” are______. A.turning into green meadows B.the resource of salt in the Arabian sea C.the empty area without population D.abundant in oil as a matter of fact 4、According to the text, icebergs to be dragged to UAE’ shores will _________. A.bring water vapor and sand B.add salt water to the Arabian sea C.become “green meadows” D.attract people interested in looking at the icebergs 22.(8分)I’ve been researching my family tree since 1998 ,and I’ve long been curious about DNA as a way to learn more about my roots. The technology has come a long way in the last decade, and it’s become more affordable too. Finally, I went ahead and ordered a Y-DNA test. The results came in my email inbox from the DNA lab! When I logged in to see the results, there are 29 living people today with whom I share a common direct male ancestor in about the last 1,000 years. They live in Ireland, England, Scotland, South Africa, the United States and probably elsewhere. I had two close matches, and the rest were more distant. They both live in Ireland! What makes the connection to these two men so interesting is that most Irish genealogical (族谱的)records were burned in fires in Dublin and don’t exist today. Without them, it ‘s hard to trace Irish roots any further back than the 1800s. I’ve written emails to both of them and hope to hear back ! I did some more research on my Y-DNA and found my direct male ancestors were Celtics. They seem to have lived in Western Europe at the time of Ancient Rome. Migration patterns show that my DNA group likely originated in Western Asia, living there 20, 000 and 30, 000 years ago. There are relatives with similar DNA going thousands of years back in what is now Iran, India, Syria, Israel and Turkey. I was so excited by these results that I decided to trace my motherly line too. My DNA is already at the lab, so now I just have to wait another month or so, and I’m sure to find more interesting things. 1、What is the author’s purpose of doing a Y-DNA test? A.To satisfy his curiosity about DNA. B.To know more about his ancestors. C.To find his families separated long ago. D.To rewrite genealogical records in Ireland. 2、Which of the following can replace the underlined word “matches” in paragraph 3? A.friends B.relatives C.ancestors D.competitions 3、Where did the author’s family root in? A.Ireland. B.Western Asia. C.Ancient Rome. D.Western Europe. 4、How did the author feel about the results of the DNA test? A.Inspired. B.Relieved. C.Confused. D.Discouraged. 23.(8分)Five weeks ago I had total hip replacement surgery (髋关节置换手术). In Canada, we have a great healthcare system. That means we get our new hips for free. My hip had been hurting me for years before I went to the doctor. Of course, it was free. She referred me to a surgeon, but the earliest appointment was in 10 months. That is what being free gets you. Ten months later, after some free X-rays, the surgeon told me I needed surgery, which was about an 18-month wait, for some senior citizens had been on the operation list. Another 18 months! I dragged myself out of the surgeon’s office. Walking through the hospital, I thought about the situation. As the breadwinner of a large family, I couldn’t wait that long, so I had to get to the front line. I was fully aware of what a Canadian should be like (Canadians are usually considered gentle and ca-ring), but this time I really needed to fight for myself. At that very moment, in the shop window of the hospital, I saw a sign which read, “Volunteers Needed.” Suddenly, an idea occurred to me—I would get the job. Fortunately, they signed me up immediately because the average age of the volunteers at the shop was 75. They were desperate for some young blood. Every Friday morning, I was at the shop. While seeing the hospital staff, I’d casually be asked, What do you do? Then ld tell them, Well, lm getting my hip replaced—in 18 months. It’s going to be so great when the pain stops. Soon, all the staff got to know me. Naturally, in my next appointment, the surgeon recognized me. Moments later, I had a surgery date just weeks away. I had to say it was actually my volunteering that got me to the front of the line. And I’m not ashamed of it, for I intend to stick with the volunteering. Also, even when I cheated the system, I did it in a way that benefits society. 1、What can we infer from the second paragraph? A.She felt rather disappointed. B.She couldn’t walk because of the pain. C.She was too scared to have the surgery. D.She didn’t believe what the surgeon said. 2、Why did the writer decide to be a volunteer? A.To donate blood to the hospital. B.To get her new hip free of charge. C.To receive some tiny gifts from others. D.To approach the doctor for early surgery. 3、What did the author think of her cheat? A.It was a shame. B.It was a pride. C.It was beneficial. D.It was a fair deal. 4、Which can be the best title for the text? A.How I Got My New Hip B.The Doctor Who Saved My Life C.How to Be a Volunteer in Hospital D.The Problem of Canada’s Healthcare System 24.(8分) Stuttering(口吃) is a communication disorder(疾病) generally characterized by unconscious repetitions or pauses in the flow of speech. These repetitions and pauses can bake many forms, such as repetitions of parts of words (“li-li-like this”). Sometimes, there are moments when a sound or a period of silence is lengthened (“llllike this” or “l-ike this”). Stuttering can be classified into a number or communication disorders: neurogenic(神经性的) stuttering and psychogenic stuttering are associated with sudden onset (发作) and, as their names imply, with a specific known cause—either a problem in the makeup of the brain or a great psychological challenge. These disorders are comparatively rare and differ in terms of causes, symptoms and treatment from developmental stuttering. Developmental stuttering typically starts between the ages of two and a half and four. The onset of the disorder, which can be gradual or relatively sudden, generally occurs during the period of rapid development in a child’s language skills, motor skills, character, and social interaction. The cause of developmental stuttering are not well understood and various theories have been offered throughout the history of speech-language pathology (the study of the causes and effects of illnesses). The roots of stuttering have been believed to relate to a number of causes: emotional problems, neurological problems, improper reactions from caregivers and family members, language planning, and speech motor difficulties among others. These theories have shown the promise of explaining some characteristics of stuttering but no single theory has thoroughly described the experiences of people who stutter. Young children who have stuttered for only a short time have a high rate of natural recovery, though it is impossible to determine which children are most likely to recover and which are likely to continue stuttering. Most experts recommend early evaluation and treatment aimed at preventing the development of a chronic(慢性的) communication disorder. Speech-language pathologists disagree about which approach is best for older children and adults. Treatment options include training to change speech patterns, turning to doctors to minimize negative reactions, drugs, and electronic tools that improve fluency. Self-help and support groups also play an important role in recovery for many people who stutter. Many people who have taken stuttering treatment programs are able to make positive changes in their speech skills and communication abilities so they can communicate freely. 1、If a small child begins to stutter, his or her parents should ________. A.give their family more time B.consult a doctor immediately C.wait for the child to recover naturally D.encourage the child to speak fluently 2、What can we say about the approaches to treatment of stuttering? A.They prove to be useless for children. B.They are at the experimental stage. C.They produce positive effects. D.They work against each other. 3、The main purpose of the text is to ________. A.describe recent research on stuttering B.show us the classification of stuttering C.explain the different forms of stuttering D.offer some basic knowledge of stuttering 25.(10分)If you’re showering every day, you’re probably over doing it. In fact, showering too often can actually hurt your body in the long run. As Time’s public health column explains, daily showers are common due to social norms more than any proper health need. We connect being freshly showered with being attractive and pleasing, so we tend to showering often to feel better. But what’s the ideal shower frequency? In terms of your health — not how you look or smell — probably once or twice a week, assistant professor of dermatology at George Washington University, Dr. C.Brandon Mitchell says. “Your body is naturally a well-oiled machine,” he says. “A daily shower isn’t necessary.” Of course, your situation may vary. If you have a job like car maintenance or construction, you’ll obviously have a visible layer of dirt you’ll need to wash off every single day. Similarly, if you work out every day, you may not have any health risks by washing every day, but you’ll still be smelly. If you feel like you need to take daily showers for aesthetic(审美的) reasons, at least make most of them light showers. “I tell patients who shower daily not to soap their whole bodies,” Mitchell says. Hit your pits, butt and groin, whi
