21.(6分)The Island Rule is one of the best explanations scientists could give to the observable phenomenon that animals and humans have evolved (演变) depending on the resources available in their habitat (栖息地). Through time, scientists have noticed through fossil (化石) records that some large animals from mainland habitats have dwarf (矮小的) versions in bland habitats.
A report from BBC described the existence of what scientists call “hobbit island” off a small island somewhere in Indonesia. It was given such a name because fossil records of tiny, humanlike creatures have been found in the region. What they called as “hobbits” or “Homo Floresiensis”, are only as tall as one meter and arc small versions of early human species with tinier brains.
Though scientists cannot perfectly trace the origin of the “Homo Floriensis”, they believe that they arc human relatives, but it is the “island life” that has caused them to evolve as they have. Scientists have noticed through fossil records and existing organisms (有机体) today that it seems if large animals grow small in islands while small animals grow large in larger islands.
In theory, animal and human bodies have adjusted to the available food and fresh water in their habitats. Since there is no opportunity for them to leave their island, they might as well adapt.
New York Magazine explained that islands usually have fewer predators (捕食者) than mainland ecosystems. However, it is the lack of resources that cause the death of many animals. As a means of natural adaptation, the bodies of these animals have evolved smaller than their ancestors, making their bodies require fewer resources.
A report from Web Ecoist listed down a few examples of animals that have shrunk significantly compared with their ancestors. Some of these include the Bali tiger as small as leopards (豹).
1、How did the name “hobbit island” come from?
A.Scientists discovered dwarf people living on the island.
B.One meter tall human being made a living on these islands.
C.Scientists found human species with tinier brains on an island.
D.Evidences showing tiny, human-like creatures on the island were found.
2、What do you know about “Homo Floricnsis”?
A.They used to only live somewhere in Indonesia.
B.They were the earliest ancestor of human beings.
C.They look small compared with normal humans.
D.They gradually grew larger on the larger islands.
3、According to New York Magazine, .
A.animals on island lack enough food to live on
B.many animals died off for no apparent reason
C.too many predators will do damage to the ecosystem
D.predators make island animals turn smaller
4、What can be inferred from the text?
A.More predators can help animals grow stronger and larger.
B.Bali tiger turns small because of adaptation to the environment.
C.More food resources should be provided lo islands.
D.Animals on mainland arc fiercer than those on islands.
22.(8分) Don’t we all know a “Happy Meal” when we see one — the famous boxed meal that includes a hamburger, kid-sized French fries, fruits and milk, served with a toy that’s extremely popular with children who love to collect them?
A Happy Meal is a form of kids’ meal sold at a certain fast-food chain since 1979. A toy is included in the meal, both of which are usually contained in a box or paper bag. However, collectors of these little toys will not get them any longer, since the company will replace toys with books and each of these books will mainly pass on nutritional messages.
Happy Meals are extremely popular with kids, especially for their collectable toys, when you consider that over 1.3 billion of these packages are sold each year. These packages have been very controversial. Health supporters believe that drawing kids to these meals with toys is clever way of promoting unhealthy food choices. They see it as an advertising strategy of “catching its customers young”—a move that has paid off very well for the fast-food company.
Child development experts say that food habits get formed in children by age six and continue through to their adult life. Fatty and sugary foods such as those served in Happy Meals are believed to play a big role in growing health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Public health care costs have gone up and untold amounts of money have been spent on coping with these health problems. On November 2, 2010, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a law requiring that children’s meals sold in restaurants must meet certain nutritional standards before they could be sold with toys, to overcome the problem of childhood obesity—in other words, the State of California tried to ban the toys in Happy Meals. However, it was strongly opposed by some as being heavy-handed, and the ban was thrown out by the government.
While some people believe that the fast-food company, with its large following of children, can create a powerful message through the books, others believe its actions are contradictory. Anyway, the company is trying to spread the message of nutrition while it is serving food that is anything but healthy.

23.(8分) Robinson Crusoe is a famous novel written by Daniel Defoe. The book tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked (遭遇海难的). He spends 28 years on an island near Venezuela. The book tells the story of everything that happens to Robinson Crusoe. He hopes someone will rescue him, but he has been there for so long on his own that he also begins to fear being rescued.
Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. Most experts believe the story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. On an expedition (探险) in 1704, Selkirk had an argument with his ship’s captain. Selkirk thought the ship was not safe and was about to fall apart.
When the ship stopped at a remote island to get fresh water? Selkirk got off. He tried to get the other crew members to leave with him, but nobody would. The ship then sailed away without him. Selkirk spent four years and four months on his own on the island, known as Aguas Buenas.
Selkirk was finally rescued by a ship that visited the island in 1709. The ship’s captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the crew when they arrived.
Now archaeologists think they have found the remains of Selkirk’s camp on Aguas Buenas. They found two deep holes that would have held wooden posts. The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships coming close to the island.
The most interesting evidence, the archaeologists say, is part of a piece of equipment used by sailors to navigate (导航). Historians believe Selkirk was a navigator, so the instrument could have belonged to him.
Robinson Crusoe was published ten years after Selkirk was rescued. Most experts think Daniel Defoe heard and read stories about Selkirk, which inspired him to write the book.
1、Why did Selkirk choose to land on the remote island?
A.Because he had quarrels with the crew members.
B.Because the captain ordered him to get fresh water.
C.Because he wanted to go on an adventure there.
D.Because he thought the ship he was on was in danger.
2、We can infer from the text that the ship that visited Aguas Buenas in 1709 .
A.lost its way while sailing
B.lacked fresh water upon arrival
C.was being navigated by Selkirk
D.was running out of food upon arrival
3、How could Selkirk see ships that might rescue him, according to archaeologists?
A.By asking the crew members on the ships.
B.By sending messages to the ships’ captains.
C.By watching from his shelter high on the island.
D.By using a piece of equipment used to navigate.
4、The author wrote the text to .
A.explain the origin of Robinson Crusoe
B.promote sales of Robinson Crusoe
C.criticise Alexander Selkirk’s deeds
D.praise Daniel Defoe for his writing inspiration
24.(8分)It has become a certain belief among the public----drink at least eight glasses of water a day to improve health and wellbeing. Bottled water companies often repeal it to increase their sales but it is actually a silly idea. There is no evidence to prove the advantages of drinking eight glasses of water a day, scientists say.
The misunderstanding is caused from the suggestion that adults should drink 2.5 liters of water daily, which was stressed by the British Medical Journal in December. The important part of the suggestion that most of this quantity of water is contained in prepared foods, however, is usually ignored.
US researchers who reviewed the evidence concluded that most people do not need to worry about the amount of water they drink every .day. Besides drinking water, they will be getting plenty of liquid(液体)in other ways. Caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee and cola and alcohol(酒)can help reach the daily total if they don't drink too much, though these drinks help the production of urine (尿). Less well known arc the dangers of drinking too much water, causing water poisoning, low salt levels and even death.
The review of research by Dan Negoianu, from the University of Pennsylvania, found that not a single study included the suggestion of drinking eight glasses of water a day. Although one small study suggested that drinking water could result in fewer headaches, the results were not very important. However, the benefits of drinking some water to prevent a pain in head after drinking too much alcohol are, separately, proved to be true.
No studies showed any advantages to the color of the skin because of the increased water taken into bodies. Dehydration(脱水)can make skin less pleasant, but there was no clear evidence to support the idea that water helps people keep a youthful appearance. The researchers also found no evidence that drinking lots of water does some good to the body's organs(器官).
1、From the passage, we know that the suggestion about drinking eight glasses of water a day .
A.causes some serious diseases
B.has enough scientific evidence to support it
C.is misunderstood by people in fact
D.was published by the British Medical Journal
2、From the passage we learn that many people don't know that_______ .
A.the production of urine can cause water to lose
B.health can be improved by drinking plenty of' water
C.better skin can result from intake of much water
D.caffeinated drinks can provide the water people need
3、What can be proved about drinking a lot of water according to the passage
