The function, however, took on meaning and became a form of communication which signals anger. The same may be true for the animals. Baby monkeys cry for attention. They also cry to signal to an adult that they want to be carried. “Chimpanzees do make upset voice when they are being weaned (断奶) by their mothers or have lost their mothers or another individual,” says Anne Pusey, a professor at the University of Minnesota. “They whimper (呜咽) and cry and scream. When we hear these calls, the emotion involved seems obvious. However, they do not weep in the sense of producing tears. I have seen an adolescent male whimpering when he lost sight of his older brother with whom he had been traveling.” Babies of many mammalian species, including rats, cry. Moreover, when a baby rat cries, often his mother brings the fallen pup back into the nest. This is probably a straightforward communication, as it is with humans. However, psychologists at the University of Iowa aren’t convinced. The Iowan researchers can cause the same crying sounds by producing large decreases and then increases in blood flow. The blood flow also goes down when baby rats get cold. Thus, they conclude baby rats cry in the same way that we sneeze. Of course the rat baby could be crying because he’s cold and wants his mother to know. “All young mammals make cries when separated from their mother,” says Jaak Panksepp, a psychologist at Bowling Green State University. “If you’re willing to call this crying, then certainly other animals show this emotional response.” he says, “Some of us take seriously that animals do have emotions.” 1、According to the first paragraph, what kind of emotion does “exposing the teeth” express? A.Disappointment. B.Excitement. C.Anger. D.Happiness. 2、Which is one probable reason why young chimpanzees might be crying? A.They meet their brother. B.They have nothing to eat. C.They are being breast-fed. D.They are parted from their mother. 3、Under what circumstance will baby rats cry just like humans’ sneeze? A.Their blood flow is decreased. B.They feel cold and long for affection. C.Their blood flow is increased. D.Their mother brings them back home. 4、Where is the passage most likely taken from? A.An animal journal. B.A physiology book. C.A health magazine. D.A cultural newspaper. 23.(8分)Conformity involves changing your behaviour to “fit in” or “go along” with the people around you. In some cases, this social influence might involve agreeing with or acting like the majority of people in a specific group, or involve behaving in a particular way to be viewed as “normal” by the group. Actually, conformity is something that happens regularly in our social world. Sometimes we’re aware of our behaviour, but in many cases it happens without much thought or awareness on our parts. And even in some cases we go along with things we disagree with or behave in ways we know we shouldn’t. There are countless examples of conformity in life. For instance, a teenager dresses in a certain style because he wants to fit in with the rest of the teenagers in his social group. A woman reads a book for her book club and really enjoys it. When she attends her book club meeting, the other members all dislike the book. Rather than go against the group opinion, she simply agrees with the others that the book is terrible. Why do we conform? In many cases, looking to the rest of the group for clues for how we should behave can actually be helpful. Others might have greater knowledge or experience than we do, so following their lead can actually be instructive. And in some cases, we conform to the expectations of the group to avoid looking foolish. This tendency can become especially strong in situations where we aren’t quite sure how to act. Additionally, there are some situations where we conform just in order to avoid punishments or gain rewards. There are many factors that influence conformity. For example, not knowing how to perform a difficult task makes people more likely to conform. Personal characteristics such as motivation to achieve and strong leadership abilities are linked with a decreased tendency to conform. And people are more likely to conform in situations that involve between three and five other people. 1、What can we learn about conformity from the first paragraph? A.Actually it is rare for us to conform. B.Blind conformity should be criticized. C.Sometimes people tend to conform unconsciously. D.Conformity means changing your behaviour reluctantly. 2、Which of the following is a case of conformity? A.Joining a certain organization. B.Following the ongoing fashion. C.Sharing something personal with others. D.Giving up your creative ideas cautiously. 3、When are we most likely to conform according to the text? A.When we are at a loss. B.When we are rejected. C.When we feel threatened. D.When we feel uncomfortable. 4、What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.Conformity cannot be avoided by anyone. B.Conformity is linked to the size of the group. C.Conformity is a natural response to challenges. D.Conformity isn’t related to individual differences. 24.(8分)Many Americans think of driverless cars as a futuristic technology that will revolutionize travel in cities and along state highways. But recent experiments are proving that autonomous vehicles also have the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of Americans underserved by traditional ways of transportation, such as the elderly and disabled, so long as lawmakers make smart policies that pave the way for innovation. A retirement community in San Jose, Calif. , which has been transformed by a small fleet(车队) of driverless taxis, shows the potential of self-driving cars to transform people’s lives. Built by a tech start-up called Voyage, the modified(被改进的) Ford Fusions are currently limited to a two-mile road, but residents are already having the benefits of these autonomous vehicles, which allow them to participate in social activities they would otherwise be unable to enjoy simply because they could not get to them. When the trial run finally expands to 15 miles of road, these residents—whose average age is 76—will also have a convenient and reliable new way to appointments. As these cars continue to serve residents there, it is easy to understand why California is moving to simplify regulations for the industry. In Michigan, forward-thinking policies have the potential to unlock other hidden benefits of autonomous vehicles, especially for those with physical disabilities. The Michigan Disability Rights Coalition has strongly advocated for the development of this technology, saying that it could give people with disabilities greater opportunities in the workforce and enable them to lead more fulfilling(满意的), independent lives. Many recognize that autonomous vehicles will be the future of transportation, but it is too often overlooked that this future cannot arrive fast enough for millions of Americans who are forced to depend on others for day-to-day travel. The policymakers should follow the lead of places like California and Michigan, and pass rules and regulations to unlock these hidden benefits of driverless cars. 1、What’s the attitude of most American people to the future of autonomous vehicles? A.uncertain B.doubtful C.indifferent D.optimistic 2、What is the modified Ford Fusion? A.The collection of social activities. B.The name of a retirement community. C.A kind of autonomous vehicle. D.A two-mile road for self-driving cars. 3、Examples are given in the third and fourth paragraphs to prove A.what are preventing the development of the technology B.why driverless cars are restricted in many states in America C.how driverless technology benefits the aged and disabled D.when driverless cars can enter people’s life eventually 4、What does the author attempt to inform us in the last paragraph? A.The concept of autonomous vehicles has been widely recognized. B.The weak groups are often overlooked despite technology advances. C.The benefits of driverless cars have been fully unlocked. D.Regulations should go hand in hand with driverless technology. 25.(10分) In Asia, there are special competitions where kites have complex designs and are fitted with instruments that make musical sounds as the wind blows through them. Although all kites have a similar structure (结构), they are widely different in size and shape. Kite-fighting competitions are also held, in which competitors use their kites to attack and bring down their opponents’ (对手) kites or cut their strings (线). For more than 15 years, the Big Wind Kite Factory has been giving kite-making and kite-flying classes f
