21.(6分)As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. “The woods” was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend’s house and found him not at home, his mother might say, “Oh, he’s out in the woods,” with a tone (语气) of airy acceptance. It’s similar to the tone people sometimes use now a days to tell me that someone I’m looking for is on the golf course or at the gym, or even “away from his desk”. For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for awhile.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探索). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.
Often we got “lost” and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical; the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.

22.(8分)Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.”
Smell, which dictates(决定) the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.
According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites.
In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.
However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors.

4、What is the passage mainly about?

23.(8分)Most cell phone companies design models especially for kids. But parents are usually the ones buying the phones, and paying the bill. According to a study, 56% of parents of children aged 8 to 12 have given their children a cell phone. According to a recent survey, 12 is the magic number. It is the most common age for kids to get their first cell phone. But 13% of children aged 6 to 10 already have one. That’s more than one out of every 10 kids.
Pro-cell phone people, including many parents, notice that cell phones help kids keep in touch with their friends and families. They believe that cell phones are an important tool in a dangerous situation. Kids can stay connected with their parents at all times, whether it’s to ask for a ride home from soccer practice or to receive a good – luck text message moments before a big game. Plus, some cell phone designed for kids can be controlled with settings that allow the phone to only be used in parent - approved ways. What’s the harm in that?
But other people are worried about the health and safety effects of kids’ cell phones. They believe that plugged - in kids could be missing out on other activities, such as playing outside or hanging out with friends, and that sending text messages or fielding phone calls while doing homework is bad for concentration. They say that kids are spending too much time texting instead of talking to each other. “Our brains evolved to communicate face to face,” says Gary Small, a professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, in California. “A lot of this is lost with texting.”
And some experts are also concerned about possible health risks. They worry that radiation or energy waves-released by cell phones could be harmful to young people. To be safe, many pediatricians advise limiting talk time.

24.(8分)BEIJIHG, Dec. 7 (Xinhua)---China has released evidence confirming Japanese troops’ six-week campaign of slaughter in honour of the third National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims on Dec. 13. Some of the records had never been seen by the public before.
The Nanjing Massacre continues to haunt the country’s collective memory. For the survivors, their memories of that horrible winter will never fade. Luo Jin worked in a photo store at the time. One day he was asked by a Japanese officer to develop two rolls of film, among which he saw three photos showing Chinese people beheaded by Japanese soldiers. Risking his life, Luo held on to these photos and hid them in a secret place. After the war, he passed them on to a military court in Nanjing.
There is abundant evidence of the inhumane crime. Among the documents released were newspaper articles published after the massacre. One reported how the Japanese surrounded and slaughtered tens of thousands who they believed were Chinese soldiers. Another disclosed how Japanese military trucks rolled back and forth on bodies scattered along the river side.
On its website, China’s State Archives Administration said the documents released were not just records of the past, but lessons for the future.
The Nanjing Massacre documents are invaluable memories. They are of great value to recognize, oppose and stop inhumane, cruel and heartless acts, and to avoid human tragedies like the Nanjing Massacre from ever happening again.
