Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings. One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby. The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again. Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere(干预) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression. The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear. These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression. 1、According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies? A.The environment. B.Their peers C.Mother’s sensitivity D.Education before birth 2、What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories? A.To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born B.To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies C.To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills D.To prove that babies can learn before they are born 3、Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills? A.The children of women who did not suffer from depression B.The children of depressed but caring mothers C.The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children D.Children with high communication abilities 4、What is the main idea of the passage? A.Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies B.Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth C.Scientific findings about how time has an effect on babies’ intelligence D.A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or six months old 22.(8分) Creativity does not depend on “Eureka!!(我发现了)moments---it is a process, designed to consistently bring abstract ideas into the practical world. For creators, this emphasizes the importance of routines. Random bits of great inspiration are few and last only a short time;your works require a sustainable(可待续的)way to develop good ideas into great ones. Recall the wise words from Chuck Close: "Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration; the rest of us just show up and go to work. " Perhaps one of the best ways to improve your own processes is to study the masters. Thanks to books like Daily Rituals, our desire to see what "go to work" means ---by getting a look at the masters' regular routines-has been thoroughly satisfied. Though the output of these creative geniuses is sometimes amazing, how they conduct their work is often easy to relate to. One such person I took inspiration from was Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven kept his creative promises by strategically using his time to produce ideas. His favorite method of thinking about things is long walks through the forested valleys of Vienna without the company of other people. He placed great importance on this planned time for reflection and idea evaluation. It appears he wasn't alone; notable craftsmen all over the world share similar experience in breaking up their day with walks. Beethoven went for an active walk after lunch, and he always carried a pencil and a couple of sheets of paper in his pocket, to record chance musical thoughts. Gustav Mahler followed much the same routine-he would take a three (or four)-hour walk after lunch, stopping to quickly write down ideas on his notebook. Benjamin Britten said that his afternoon walks were "where I plan out what I'm going to write in the next period at my desk. " Recently, psychologists took an interesting step (or two) forward in understanding the creative benefits of walking-a Stanford study was able to show that walking helped people produce more novel ideas and enhanced creative thinking during the walk and immediately after, compared to sitting. As the title of the study points out, walking may be the missing ingredient to consistently give your new ideas some legs. 1、The author mentions Chuck Close's words to_________ A.emphasize the function of sitting and waiting B.emphasize the value of eureka moments C.emphasize the meaning of inspiration D.emphasize the importance of consistent work 2、What's the book Daily Rituals about? A.Common people's regular routines. B.Masters' regular routines C.Rituals of becoming masters D.Rituals of getting inspiration 3、According to the passage, Beethoven liked _________ A.walking in groups through forest B.being a notable craftsman C.breaking his creative routines D.walking alone in the forest 4、What conclusion can you draw from Paragraph 4? A.Masters think while walking B.Masters sleep after lunch C.Masters walk after work D.Masters have lunch before a walk. 5、What's the best title of the passage? A.Walking Habit for Living Longer B.Differences between Walking and Sitting C.Walking Habit for Creative Breakthroughs D.Creativity Rests on Eureka Moments 23.(8分)A new study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family claims that all that time you spend parenting just doesn’t matter. But it’s a claim that, despite the enthusiastic and widespread coverage by the media, does not hold water. The research suggests that child outcomes (including behavior problems, emotional problems, and academic performance) are barely connected with the time that parents spend with their children. The researchers examined the time diaries of 1, 600 children, looking at parenting time and outcomes when the kids were aged 3 to 11 in 1997, and again in 2002,when they were between 8 and 16. This research largely reflects the failure of the authors to correctly measure parental input (投入). It just looked at time diaries from two particular days—one a weekday and the other a weekend day. Trying to get a sense of the time you spend parenting from a single day’s diary is a bit like trying to measure your income from a single day. If yesterday was payday, you looked rich, but if it’s not, you would be reported as poor. You get a clearer picture only by looking at your income—or your parenting time—over a more meaningful period. What you did yesterday should not be taken as representative of what you did last year. This is why most high-quality studies of parenting time focus instead on how often parents read to their children, play with them or help them with homework over a period of a month or longer—long enough to represent their different approaches to parenting. As an exhausted parent who doesn’t get enough time to work out, and who hasn’t seen a movie for months, I understand why so many of us might seize on studies suggesting that we should take more time for ourselves. Perhaps we should. But I agree with Ariel Kalil, a developmental psychologist, on the suggestion “that when parents spend high-quality time with their children, their children are more likely to succeed.” 1、What do the underlined words “hold water” in the first paragraph probably mean? A.To be valid. B.To be surprising. C.To be confusing. D.To be usual. 2、What’s the purpose of conducting the study? A.To explore the link between parenting time and child outcomes. B.To explore the link between time diaries and child development. C.To explore the link between children’s habits and parents’ influence. D.To explore the link between daily activities and children’s problems, 3、How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed? A.By giving descriptions. B.By analyzing the cause. C.By making a comparison. D.By offering research findings. 4、The author may agree that high-quality-studies of parenting time should ________. A.be completed in one month B.adopt some different approaches C.concentrate mainly on learning time D.be based on data of a longer time period 24.(8分) Nisha Pradhan is worried. The recent college graduate just turns 21 and plans to live on her own. But she’s afraid she won’t be able to stay safe. That’s because she isn’t able to smell. Back home, her family do her smelling for her. She’s moved in with them for now, but she’s looking for a place of her own. “Now that I’m searching for ways or place to live as an independent person, I find that the sense of smell is important to how we live our lives,” Pradhan says. She says when she was a child she liked to eat and ate a lot. But there came a point where she lost interest in food. “One of the first things that people notice whenever they have a smell problem is that food doesn’t taste right any more,” says Beverly Cowart, a researcher. That’s because eating and smell go hand in hand. How food tastes often rely on what we smell. “When you lose your sense of smell, your whole sense of food flavors changed and reduced,” Cowart says, “You can still taste the basic tastes. What you’re missing are the small distinctions.” “When I go out to eat I have often found that food is very tasteless to me. I never feel full,” she says. “I think a lot of us today like to pretend to be food lovers and we all like to talk about ‘Oh, I think this could use a little bit more flavor,’ or ‘I think this has a hint of meat,’ I can’t really participate in those conversations,” she says. Pradam thinks her smell loss also may have affected her memory. Pradhan may be on to something, according to biologist Paul Moore. “When smell signals come in, you feel about them first. And then you think about it and then the memory is laid down. So without the feel part, the thinking about its part doesn’t come And that means no new smell memory gets created.” 1、What is true about Pradhan? A.She has had no sense of smell since she was born. B.She suffers from loss of appetite through lack of smell sense. C.She has something wrong with her stomach. D.She is looking for a roommate to share the cost. 2、What can we infer from what Beverly Cowart said? A.People with a smell problem have no food tastes.
