But communicating with a submarine (潜艇)or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater and airborne devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water. Sonar (声呐)signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of the water rather than reaching the air. Now,researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication. “What we’ve shown is that it’s actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air," says Fadel Adib,a professor at MJT’ s Media Lab,who led the research. The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations (震动)corresponding to the ls and Os of the data. A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF. It has any number of potential real-world uses, Adib says. It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane' s black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface. Right now the technology is low-resolution. The initial study was conducted in the MIT swimming pool at maximum depths of around 11 or 12 feet. The next steps for the researchers are to see if TARF is workable at much greater depths and under varying conditions—high waves, storms, schools of fish. They also want to see if they can make the technology work in the other direction— air to water. If the technology proves successful in real-world conditions, expect “texting while diving” to be the latest underwater fashion. 1、What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 1? A.The future of video chat underwater and in air. B.The frustrations of developing underwater devices. C.The difficulty of communication from water to air. D.The current situation of communicating with a submarine. 2、What does the underlined word “feasible” mean? A.Achievable. B.Convenient. C.Changeable. D.Alternative. 3、What do we know about TARF? A.It is widely used to find downed planes. B.It can work well at great depths underwater. C.It is an underwater machine that sends signals. D.It can send, receive and read signals from underwater. 4、What is the best title for the text? A.The Real-world Uses of Sonar Technology B.Full Water-to-air Communication Closer to Reality C.A Breakthrough in the Application of Video Chat D.TARF Becoming a New Means of Communication 22.(8分)What can be better than a sweet treat with health benefits? As it happens, our favourite February food, chocolate, has a few shinning characteristics. It comes from the Theobroma cacao tree (food for the Gods), from a bean that grows on that tropical tree. Chocolate originated in Mexico and Central and South America, but West Africa now produces most of the world’s cocoa. Look for fair trade chocolate that meets environmental and labour standards at natural foods markets in Kitsilano and the West End, at Karmavore in New Westminster and at Nature’s Fare Markets throughout the province. Dark or semisweet chocolate is typically a vegan(素食) product. Because chocolate contains antioxidants(抗氧化剂) that prevent the oxidation (氧化)of LDL (bad) cholesterol(胆固醇), it has gained a reputation of being beneficial for our heart health. Eaten in an appropriate amount, chocolate may lower blood pressure. Chocolate is also a source of iron – a “precious metal” when it comes to human health. As part of red blood cells, iron plays a central role in transporting oxygen to the body and carrying away the waste product carbon dioxide. Each day, we lose tiny amounts of iron in cells that are missing from skin and the inner lining of the intestine(肠壁). If our intake is not enough to replace our losses, a tired feeling and sensitivity to cold may develop. With further consuming, people feel exhausted, chilly and even headaches; the skin may appear pale. Since iron absence is such an obvious condition and easily diagnosed, if you have any doubts about your iron level, have a lab test done. We are good at recycling iron, however, losses must be replaced. Two of the Chocolate Butter Balls in the recipe(食谱) below will provide one quarter of the recommended intake of eight mg iron for the day. 1、Which region produces most of the world’s cocoa now? A.Mexico B.Central America C.South America D.West Africa 2、Why is chocolate beneficial for our heart health? A.It contains antioxidants B.It comes from the cacao tree. C.It originates in Mexico. D.It is a sweet treat. 3、What does “chilly” in the third paragraph mean? A.easy to be angry B.having a fever C.sensitive to cold D.feeling tired 4、From which is the text probably taken? A.A biology textbook. B.A health magazine. C.A research paper. D.A travel brochure. 23.(8分)Tracking Shots: This Week in Film The Incomparable Rose Hartman Quad Cinema Saturday to Sunday It is a gorgeously shot, sharply edited portrait of photographer Hartman, who in the 1970s and 1980s haunted Studio 54. Hartman made a career of capturing fashion designers, models, musicians, and movie stars in half-guarded moments, somewhere between unaware and aping for the lens. Churchill Angelika Film Center Monday to Tuesday Twentieth century’s most awesome leader, a man whose history includes two world wars! But what happens when the story being told feels emotionally false and factually bogus? Churchill, a new drama starring the great Brian Cox, is so full of movie cliches that it’s sometimes hard not to giggle—and oneshould never laugh at the prime minister. Handsome Devil Cinema Village Thursday to Friday The Ireland of the teen film Handsome Devil is a place where young boys are encouraged to do only one thing: play rugby. If rugby isn’t your thing, or if you dig things that aren’t rugby-related, you’re immediately dismissed as gay. That’s unfortunately the case for the main character—ginger-haired Ned. Indeed, it’s more like a coming of age film than a comedy. Past Life Landmark Sunshine Wednesday Although Past Life is based on real events, Avi Nesher’s latest film plays unapologetically like melodrama(情节剧)—a bit too much at times. Its insistence that guilt-ridden Baruch Milch can recite to his daughters, more than thirty years later, every single word he wrote in a notebook while hiding from the Nazis in Poland during World War II strains credulity. 1、Which film may interest people who like taking pictures? A.Churchill B.Past Life C.Handsome Devil D.The Incomparable Rose Hartman 2、Where can the audience go to enjoy a comedy this week? A.Quad Cinema B.Angelika Film Center C.Cinema Village D.Landmark Sunshine 3、What do we know about the film Past life? A.It is fictional. B.It was shown on weekend. C.Avi Nesher was the main character. D.It was concerned with the life of Jewish. 24.(8分)Hong Kong Museum of Art Established in 1962, the purpose of Hong Kong Museum of Art is to preserve the cultural heritage of China with a local focus. The writer who penned Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Matilda and The Big Friendly Giant is the i9nspiration for the Whizzfizzing Festival – which will transform the market-town of Aylesbury into all kinds of music, colour and fun on Saturday, 1 July. Formerly known as The Roald Dahl Festival, this year’s event will celebrate a broad range of children’s films and bring to life some of its best-loved characters – from Alice in Wonderland and the Gruffala to The Big Friendly Giant and Harry Potter. Things to see and do The fun and festivals start at 11 a.m. with a colourful children’s parade. More than 650 local school children and teachers, many in fancy dress, will march through the town carrying giant carnival puppets(木偶), with thousands of audiences lining the streets to watch. The parade will be followed with a range of child-friendly activities and workshops held in venues across the town. Don’t be late for the Mad Hatters Tea Party in the Bucks County Museum, catch a splendid screening of a Roald Dahl movie in the Old Court House, and watch leading children’s authors, including Julian Clary, give readings in the Market Square.
