Here are two pictures. In one picture, we can see no space for trash now. Instead of being buried underground/beneath the earth, the trash has piled up into a mountain. In another one, we can see people still throwing away their trash here and there, without a consciousness/awareness of what they are doing is just polluting our common environment. These two pictures convey to us a piece of information that rubbish/trash pollution has become a problem in China nowadays, too serious to lose any minute before we can find solutions to it. I believe there are two causes of the problem. The first cause is that people’s annual revenue/yearly income is always proportionate to the amount of rubbish. In other words, with the fast increase of GNP, people’s consumption level has been enhanced, which results much more trash than ever before. The other cause is that residents across the country have not come to realize the importance of classification of trash/classing trash. In fact, trash can be categorized into recyclable and non-recyclable. Recyclable and non-recyclable products are usually disposed in different ways. If we turn the recyclable into a new kind of materials for later use, then we can say we have not only created wealth but also saved space which we are badly in need of. Where are the solutions then? In terms of our government, they should on one hand appropriate more funds in disposing trash; on the other hand, popularize certain knowledge so that people can clearly know how to help the government dealing with trash. Of course, we citizens should try our best to find more measures to prevent this situation from going on like this forever. Wiping out/do away with (消灭)the rubbish pollution is by no means the issue for a certain person; it is our common concern, for it has much to do with every one of us, even with our offspring in the future. 323 2000 捕鱼 Here are two pictures. They look alike at first sight, but if you have a closer look, you will find that they are/find them of a sharp contrast. In the upper picture, there is a large amount of fish in the ocean/water/river/, while/whereas there is only one boat on the water. It is just the opposite case with the lower picture---more boats, few fish. What we can infer from the two pictures/ from this information is that fish is running short/is running the risk of dying out/ due to people’s unreasoning fishing, as you can see that there is only one fish left in the second picture. Why are more and more people fishing? What causes this phenomenon? Firstly, I believe those who catch fish are driven by money. As you know, delicious and nutritious as fish is, people prefer fish to meat. That means there is a large market for fish. That’s why there are an increasing number of people fishing. Secondly, some people are too selfish. They think of nothing but themselves. Nowadays, some people even gain profits/make money at sacrifice of others. Besides, they don’t care about future. Though fish is not like other natural resources which are non-renewable, fish can’t produce as many if humans keep fishing at this speed and frequency. Finally, some people, especially those young men who are living near the water take fishing as their sole job. In fact, there are a lot of other jobs available in the world. Don’t confine themselves to their hometown. From the above, we can see over-fishing has become a serious problem. It is time that both the government and people in general tried to find solutions./ There is no time to lose in finding solutions. I suggest our government should draw up strict laws to stop this behavior going on. On the other hand, we common people should not place money first. Fish, like other natural resources, can be exhausted if humans don’t protect them. 324 2001 爱的力量 When we say “love”, we tend to think of the love between two sexes. In fact, here, the drawer refers to “philanthropy”, a kind of universal love. The love between two sexes can be selfish, while the philanthropy can’t. Just as the caption/subtitle/ of the picture says, love is like a lamp;it shines brighter against darkness/the darker the place is, the brighter the light it gives off. That means love is only meaningful when it is given to those who are badly in need. Love, especially an individual love, sometimes seems trifle just like the small oil lamp in the picture. But if the light of love is shed on the people who are in trouble/difficulty, unexpected changes can be brought to them. The smiling flame of the oil lamp indicates the happiness and gratitude of those who have received help/assistance/aid from others. We can cite a lot of examples of love in our country. In the past years, there have occurred earthquakes in Wenchuang and Yushu. In both cases, the PLA men went to the spots/sites at the first time after the disaster happened/took place. In the rescue, an old woman was saved, whereas a young soldier probably died. This typical example can be read in the newspaper every day at that time, which really moved the whole country to tears. In my opinion, love is very indispensible to human beings. We should love not only our families, but also our friends, even peoples of other countries/nations. Love’s power is usually beyond description. It is a noble virtue worthy of/worth eulogizing eternally/worthwhile to be eulogized/ our eternal eulogization. 262 2002 中国文化 This is a bust of an American girl. Instead of wearing her own national clothes, she put on a Chinese traditional costume, to be more exact, in fact the dress of one of our ethnic minorities. We can tell that she feels very happy and proud dressed like that, for she is smiling sweetly/her face is beamed with a smile. What can we infer/deduce/conclude from this picture? More and more foreigners have become interested in China, especially in Chinese culture. Before our opening policy was implemented/carried out in 1976, few westerners knew about China. In their minds, China was a very backward country. The Chinese must have worn clothes in rags or unified blues jackets and black trousers. They even thought that the Chinese should have had no aesthetic taste, since they were suffering from poverty. So when they came to China and saw/witnessed with their own eyes what China and the Chinese people were really like, they were not only surprised/amazed, but also greatly impressed. Normally/generally speaking, the deeper they get to know China, the more they like her. We can tell this feeling from the behavior and facial impression of the girl in the picture above. What can be deduced/got/obtained/inferred from this phenomenon? Peoples of different countries should communicate with each other quite often. With knowledge of other countries, we cannot have any prejudice towards them. Constant /frequent contact seems easier and feasible/practical under modern conditions. We should make good use of today’s favorable surroundings/environments/ facilitates and peaceful situation for better understanding internationally. 235 2003 温室里的花朵 The two pictures intend to make a contrast of a flower in two different situations/on diverse occasions. In one picture, the flower is in full bloom, while in the other, it withers/fades. The cause of this change is simple/easy to discern. The plastic film, serving as a shelter, protects the tender flower from sun, wind and storm. Obviously, the drawer compares the flower to/with our children who are overprotected in China. He implies that today’s kids are like “flowers in the greenhouse”; they cannot withstand/tolerate rain or storm. With the family-planning/one-child policy, each family in China can have only one child. It is not strange when you find that the child becomes a king or a queen in the family. As an apple of the whole family’s eye, he or she received love from his or her grandparents, parents and relatives. To be more exact, the kids are supposed to do nothing but study. Once they meet with any difficulty in their growth, they will turn to their parents. After a considerable period of time, they are found good for nothing. In other words, they cannot bear any burden, nor overcome any obstacles or setbacks/frustrations when they come upon the stage/enter a society. It sounds a sad story when we hear it, but it is true and common in China. I strongly believe that there is a big problem with our parenting (parental teaching). Parents must distinguish between love and overindulgence. Providing them with affluent materials is a kind of love, but cultivating their abilities in every aspect/in all resects, especially the ability to deal with problems is also a kind of love/another kind of love. Children today are bound/sure to grow into adults tomorrow. Parents should take long views/far-sighted. 276 2004 起点又是终点 From this picture, we can tell a young man is taking part in/participating in a race, probably a marathon as there are trees on either side of the track, and he is reaching the finish line. Enlightened by the capture “The ending point is also the beginning point”, we know that this athlete is starting his new race instead of getting overjoyed at his victory. Of course, the drawer of this picture doesn’t really give us an account of an actual competition. He is eulogizing a spirit of unremitting efforts. Thomas Edison is entitled to be a good example (can serve as a typical example). During his lifetime, Edison made more than one thousand inventions, such as electricity, telegraph, phonograph, cinecamera, crusher/grinding mill and so on. Why could his inventions keep coming out (come into being continuously)? No doubt, it is his sustain efforts and his dissatisfaction with the previous success that made him moving up all the time. In his mind, previous success/merits could only belong to the past; it/they could not guarantee what you are doing or what you will do in the future. The implication of this picture is thought-provoking/ philosophical. As a proverb goes: “Modesty helps one go forward, whereas conceit makes one lag behind.” This truth can be applicable not only to an individual like you and me, but also to the community like a country. So far, China has made enormous progress in every aspect/respect, but we also need to realize that there is a far cry between China and such other western countries as America and Britain. 259 Be left behind can be applied can be acceptable 2005 道德的丧失 The cartoon entitled “football match of supporting old parents” is heart-breaking to see. The children who have grown up should have discarded their elderly father like a football. Each one of them seems like a skillful/professional goal keeper, preventing the ball---the father here from entering his or her own door (totally on guard against the ball entering the door) . They treat their father so mercilessly that we can’t help wondering where their consciousness is. Filial piety is one of our traditions in China. This virtue has been handed down from one generation to another for thousands of years. Unfortunately, it is being forgotten nowadays. Being filial to our parents is not an abstract concept; this is an actual responsibility/obligation which we should bear/shoulder. Each one of us used to be a child and will be a parent in the future. When we are young, we have no ability to raise ourselves. It is our parents who bring us up. When we become independent/grow up, why should we shirk our obligations to support them? Just imagine, if our children turn away from us like this when we get old, then what should we do? So we should realize “Example is better than precept”. In order to solve the problem, I suggest that the related laws (or law concerned) should be stricter (more rigid). Our government can also launch a campaign to reinforce/enhance/strengthen the public consciousness/awareness of the duty. Newspapers can make a constant report on this issue, praising those who can be set as a good example and criticizing those who betray their parents. 247 Be conscious of be aware of be ignorant of 2006 非理性的崇拜 Here there are two pictures; both demonstrating/illustrating/displaying/proving/reflecting a social phenomenon that some young people worship their idols so much so that they do something that is unthinkable. As in the left picture, the man stamped on his face the name of the English well-known football player, Beckham. In the picture on the right side, another young man should have spent 300 yuan in modeling/imitating (模仿) Beckham’s hairstyle. To adore/admire an idol is not is a mistake, but there are two things which we have to live up to as preconditions. One is “degree”. When we adore/admire somebody, we can appreciate his or her outstanding professional skills, for all their achievements resulted from their diligence and persistence. It is of no necessity to fellow everything of theirs, like lifestyle, clothes and so on. The other point is “object”. That means what kind of person can be a model for us, especially young people. In my opinion, a scientist, a doctor, or a teacher can serve as a model. Though they are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes; however, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone. If the heroes of today for Chinese young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look bright. Next, how we guide our young people in adopting a correct attitude towards life seems of paramount importance. From my personal perspective, education at home and at school can not be separated from one another. In other words, both teachers and parents should tell kids what is valuable in a person. Only those merits which can be beneficial to our whole society/nation are what we should pursue, not any person in particular. 286 2007 心理素质的重要性 This cartoon is made up of four parts, but it intends to convey only one meaning---a person’s psychological quality can exert an influence on the result. We can see in the picture that both of the player and the goalkeeper are lack of self-confidence: the play considers the goalkeeper too big so that he can hardly get this ball through; while the goalkeeper thinks that the play is strong so much so that he can’t prevent the ball from entering his net. It is a truth that having a correct psychology is of paramount significance while we are doing something. As we know, a positive psychological factor can help one achieve success, whereas/while a negative psychological factor is likely to affect your original plan, incurring/leading to a failure. A typical example can be found in the exam. Some students tend to feel nervous at the critical moment like having an exam. Though they work very hard reviewing his lessons, getting well prepared, but once the exam starts, their hearts beat fast. They can’t concentrate themselves on the paper. Their hands are shaking too, hardly able to
