Come Back! Shadow
“Damn it! Who spilt milk on the floor? Kate! ......”
“Kate! Appease the crying child quickly! It is so annoying!”
“Kate! Where is Mrs. Smith’s black dress?”
“Kate! Help the children in Room9 to clean up……”
“Kate! ...... Kate! …… Kate! ...... ”
It is a new day, a sunny day, a beautiful day. However, as for Kate, an orphan who was brought up by a spinster——Jane, the owner of a laundry, never have spare time to breathe, let alone touch the sunshine or smell the flowers. In the old laundry, there are many children adopted by Jane, and Kate is the oldest among them, so she has to help Jane take care of the naughty tots; do housework; greet guests……
Busy for a whole morning, totally exhausted, Kate finally leans against the cream-printed wall and sits on the floor to have a rest. Being lost in thought, Kate thinks that she is special among the children and the women in this poor, narrow street, because she has a dream to be a photographer in a prosperous city, but not like the girls or women here just living an ordinary and quiet life.
Though this dream is less realistic, Kate always seizes opportunity to “take photo” by her little fingers formed a square. All of her “photos” are about the sunset in this tranquil street, old men lying in the rocking chair, naughty boys climbing trees and playing with a black cat……Kate is not satisfied with the dull life here. She desires to grow up and wears high-heeled shoes to a metropolis where she can take different photos for different people.
“Run away!”
“Run away! .......”
“Run away from this unfashionable street!”
“Run away, run……run……” Kate mutters.
One day, Kate is asked to send a pair of well-polished black high-heeled shoes to a guest. So elegant and pretty the shoes are! Kate is attracted by them, fearfully hesitating to wear the shoes.
“Try? Can I try? Just a moment, a little moment.” She thinks.
Finally, she gingerly puts her feet in, though the shoes are too big for her. Looking at the shadow——her elongated figure, she is delighted, totally delighted. She walks gaily and runs.
Run! Run! Run!
Run away from this dreary street.
Run away from here with the beautiful high-steeled shoes……
“Oh! No! What’s wrong?” Kate shouts anxiously.
She is pulled by a strong strength. Strangely, she is running in the sky.
“Hey, Kate, little Kate, do not be afraid!” a shadow says to Kate.
“Why? Why am I here? Who are you? Why?”
“My pretty girl, I am you. You look! I wear the same shoes like you. I am your shadow!” the shadow laughs and continues “I am taking you to a prosperous city and you can take photos there as you like!”
“Really? Oh! Thanks!” Kate claps her hands excitedly.
“But people will regard me as monster if I do not have a shadow.” Kate is worried.
“Don’t worry about it. People there are all without shadow like you, so you can see and communicate with each other.”
Suddenly, a flash passes. Kate stands on a crowded road where neon lights flash in turn. The roads are filled with cars. The people walk fast passing her, even the birds being hurry to build their nests. Though they are all strange to Kate, she is excited and satisfied.
“But I do not have a camera.” Kate whispers.
“You go to the busy road and collect some dust and fumes from it. Then you can get a camera.” shadow says to her.
“What?” Kate doubts.
“Try.” shadow says.
Kate does it according to what the shadow says. Miraculously, the dust and fumes change into a camera. Kate can not say anything but run crazily. Out of happiness, she takes photos everywhere. However, to her surprise, all the photos she has taken are blurred. Sad, grieved, depressed and puzzled, Kate looks at this busy city carefully. The bruised and battered workers, the fast footstep, the endless bustle……they all run too fast to catch. Therefore, Kate can not take clear photos for them.
Suddenly, a weary woman with dark circles under tired eyes is coming to her. The woman asks Kate to take a photo for her and asks Kate smugly “I do look nice in the picture, don’t I?”
“Um……well, the answer lies in the negative.” Kate replies scrupulously.
Kate runs. Runs! Runs! And runs! She wants to run far away from here. She misses her old but quiet street. She misses the ordinary but leisure people. She runs to find her shadow. She realizes that because the people here are all living lives so hurry that their shadows can not catch them, so they live busy lives without shadow. They struggle for lives. They forget their original pace. They are hurry to run. They tired but run, run, run……
“Kate! It is time to make lunch. Kate! Kate?”
Kate opens her eyes, finding that she has slept and dreamed lying against the wall.
