Teaching procedures:
Step1. Lead-in
Ask the students to name some great scientists, lead out Nicolaus Copernicus by present his picture on the PPT, and introduce him simply.
Step2. Reading
1 Give the students 10 minutes to read the passage and find the answer of the four questions by group work
• a What did Copernicus think was the center of the solar system?
• b Why Copernicus couldn’t he tell anyone about the theory?
• c How many years did Copernicus work on the problem to complete his theory?
• d When did Copernicus publish his theory?
Then, check the answer before asking some students to answer
2 Let Ss draw the two theories of the universe on P7
3 Let Ss judge the sentences which present the information of the text to check if they have got the passage generally.
4 Language points: Let the student read the passage paragraph by paragraph to pick out the problems they have.
The points may be:
a. lead to: All roads lead to Rome.
b. 冒号+that从句(可略):
尽管他很聪明,但他不勤奋,他从失败中得出结论:不劳无获
Though he was very clever, he didn’t work hard and all his failure led to the conclusion: that no pain no gain.
c. Only if you put the sun there did the movements of the other planets in the sky make sense.
只有当你把太阳放在中心位置上,天空中其他行星的运动才能说的清楚
Only 引导的状语放在句首,句子需用半倒装
For example:
只有用这种方法,你才能轻松得解决这个问题
Only in this way, can you deal with the problem easily.
就在你失去它的时候,你才会懂得时间宝贵。
Only when you lost it, will you understand how valuable the time is.
make sense 讲得通,有道理,有意义(反义:make no sense)
他说的有道理
What he says makes sense.
你的故事我听不明白。
Your story doesn’t make sense to me.
d. He placed a fixed sun at the centre of the solar system with the planets going round it….
他把太阳固定在太阳系的中心位置上,而行星则围绕着太阳转
With+宾语+宾语补足语(v-ing/ v-ed/ to do/ adj./ adv./ prep. Phrases) 通常作为状语,表示方式原因,条件。
随着考试的结束,我们的假期开始了
With the test finished, we began our holiday.
老师微笑地走进教室,身后还跟着一群小朋友
With a group of children following, the teacher came into the classroom with smile.

g.cautious
be cautious about/of sb/sth
h.reject
reject 和 refuse 后都可以接名词,但是reject含有对被抛弃的东西不顾一屑的意思,而refuse 可以表示谢绝reject an offer/possibility/theory
Step 3 Homework
1. Write a short letter asking Copernicus to publish his ideas. ( In order to improve the students’ writing skill)
