One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office.
When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn’t help smelling them. A Soldier's Brilliant Idea
Mr. Robinson had to travel somewhere on business, and as he was in a hurry, he decided to go by air. He liked sitting beside a window when he was flying, so when he got on to the plane, he looked for a window seat. He found all of them had already had been taken except for one. There was a soldier sitting in the seat beside this one, and Mr. Robinson was surprised that he had not taken the one by the window; but, anyhow, he at once went towards it.
When he reached it, however, he saw that there was a notice on it. It was written in ink and said, "This seat is preserved for proper load balance, thank you." Mr Robinson had never seen such an unusual notice in a plane before, but he thought that the plane must be carrying something particularly heavy in it, so he walked on and found another empty seat, not beside a window, to sit in.
Two or three people tried to sit in the window seat beside the soldier, but they too read the notice and went on, when the plane was nearly full, a very beautiful girl hurried into the plane. The soldier, who was watching the passengers coming in, quickly took the notice off the seat beside himself and in this way succeededin having the company of the girl during the whole trip.

Assertiveness is the ability to confidently express your opinions, feelings, attitudes, and rights, in a way that doesn’t infringe(侵犯) the rights of others.
Many of us are taught that it is not nice to consider our own needs above those of others. If someone says or does something that we don’t like, we should just be quiet and try to stay away from that person in the future.
Why is Assertiveness important?
If you don’t know how to be assertive, you might experience: Depression - Anger, a sense of being helpless, hopeless, or of having no control over your life. oResentment - Anger at others for taking advantage of you. oFrustration - Why did I allow that to happen?
Most people find it easier to be assertive in some situations than in others. This makes perfect sense. It’s a lot easier to hold your ground with a stranger than with someone you love. But the more important the relationship is to you, the more important it is to be assertive. Assertive behavior leads to increased respect from others!
But before you decide to act assertively, you have to decide if you can live with the results. Although assertive behavior usually will result in a positive response (积极的回应),some people might react differently.
How to be effectively(有效地) assertive: oUse "I" statements. Keep the focus on the problem you’re having. "I’d like to be able to tell my stories without interruption." instead of "You’re always interrupting my stories ! "
Use facts, not opinions. "Did you know that shirt has a hole?" instead of "You’re not going out looking like THAT, are you?" oExpress ownership of your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. "I get angry when he breaks his promises. " instead of "He makes me angry.
Make clear and direct requirements. Don’t invite the person to say no. "Will you please?" instead of "Would you mind...?" or "Why don’t you...?" oKeep repeating your point. Use a low level and pleasant voice. Don’t try to explain yourself.
1. The writer probably agrees that____________.
A. you should consider others? response before you act assertively
B. you should be assertive if you want to get good marks
C. assertiveness is the ability to infringe others’ rights
D. assertive behavior will bring you bad feelings
2. The expression "hold yourground" probably means "_________________"
A. reach an agreement
B. insist on your point
C. keep your word
D. keep on fighting
3. Which of the following helps you to be effectively assertive?
A. Explaining yourself in a soft and sweet voice.
B. Expressing ownership of others’ thoughts.
C. Making requirements directly and clearly.
D. Using your opinions instead of facts.

Think back to a time in your life when you tried something new.
When I was a teenager I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past.
I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice. I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 miles. I was thinking, “I must be crazy. Why did I do this? What was I thinking?” And at one moment, I said to myself, “I am never doing this again!”
That first 10 km race was quite an experience. I jogged(慢跑),I walked, I jogged and walked. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish.
Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed(尴尬的)that I was more than 50 years younger than he and I couldn’t even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How
