I couldn't help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked. "So, how have you been?" And the boy—who could not have been more than seven or eight years old—replied, "Frankly, I've been feeling a little depressed lately. " This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed (确认) my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn't find out we were "depressed", that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school. Undoubtedly a change in children has increased steadily (稳定地) in recent years. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why? Human development depends not only on born biological states, but also on patterns of gaining social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves (涉及) learning the secrets of the new social positions. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages; traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders. In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation machine has been equipped in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation (诱惑) ,many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more attractive moving pictures. Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children will gain. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials. 41. According to the author, feeling depressed is ________. A. a sure sign of a disease in a child B. a mental state present in all humans, including children C. something that cannot be avoided in children's early mental development D. something that shouldn't be expected in a young child 42. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world________. A. through connection with society B. gradually and under guidance C. naturally without being taught D. by watching television 43. According to the author, that today's children seem adultlike results from________. A. the widespread influence of television B. the poor arrangement of teaching contents C. the fast pace of human scientific development D. the rising standard of living 44. What does the author think of communication through print for children?_____________ A. It enables children to gain more social information. B. It develops children's interest in reading and writing. C. It helps children to read and write well. D. It can control what children are to learn. 45. What does the author think of the change in today's children?___________ A. He feels their adultlike behavior is so funny. B. He thinks the change worthy of note. C. He considers it a rapid development. D. He seems to be satisfied with it. B (选自2004年高考英语试题四川卷) The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 p. m..Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food and songs. By 9:45,everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that, they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00,there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry. Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6: 30-8: 30 p. m. means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards;8:00 p. m. or 8 :30 p. m. means possible dinner, but 9:30 p. m. and any time thereafter means to food, eat beforehand roll up late. But this is not always the case. If asked to a students' party at 6 :30 p. m., it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive—looking eager—is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6: 30, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we're young, we're probably closer to student-time than grown-up time. The accepted custom at present is confusing (混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element (成分) of surprise. 46. The underlined words "off their heads" (in Paragraph 2) probably mean___________ A. tired B. crazy C. curious D. hopeless 47. Jane and David's story is used to show that___________ A. party-goers usually get hungry at parties B. party invitations can be confusing C. people should ask for food at parties D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull 48. For some young people, arriving on time for a students' party will probably be considered___________ A. very difficult B. particularly thoughtful C. friendly and polite D. socially unacceptable 49. According to the writer, people in their late thirties___________ A. are likely to arrive late for a party B. care little about the party time C. haven't really grown up yet D. like surprises at parties 50. What is the general idea of the text? ________ A. It's safe to arrive late just when food is served B. It's wise to eat something before going to a party. C. It's important to follow social rules of party-going. D. It's necessary to read invitations carefully. 51. He speaks English well indeed, but of course not ________a native speaker. A. as fluent as B. more fluent than C. so fluently as D. much fluently than 52. It is reported that the United States uses energy as the whole of Europe. A. as twice B. twice much C. twice much as D. twice as much
