My job is to train. rats to find landmines(地雷)so the dangers can be cleared to save lives. I work for a
Belgian non-governmental organization called Apopo that operates from Morogoro, in my home country of
Tanzania. The rats I train are used in mine-clearing programs around the world, including in Angola, Azerbaijan
and Cambodia.
The animals we use are a species of African giant rat called Cricetomys ansorgeis. They are born in
sub-Saharan Africa and are the size of a small cat, which makes them easy to catch. They also live longer than
other rats, which is helpful for the program, because it takes between nine months and a year to train one fully.
My colleagues and I use a method called clicker training: we teach the rats to relate a click with a food reward,
and then use clicks to gradually reward behaviour. Rats are naturally curious, so they will explore, and their great
sense of smell means they can find buried landmines.
To teach the rats what to look for, we place small amounts of TNT explosives(炸药)in some tea eggs and
mix them with some filled with other things. We reward the rats for touching these, then move on to reward them
only when they touch a tea egg filled with explosives, rather than ones filled with other things, such as hair, flowers
and so on. The rats need to perform perfectly at each stage of training before they move to the next stage. In the
final stage, we use real landmines in a training field.
As trainers, we build a connection with the rats we train. Some are slow learners; others know the process very
quickly. Most of the rats make it through, eventually. I work with our resident scientist to continually follow and
improve our training program, because the rats are so clever that they can be smarter than the trainers!
2
4.Why were Cricetomys ansorgeis chosen for the program?
A.They can be seen commonly.
B.They’re easily accessible.
C.They’re quickly trained.
D.They live for up to a year.
2
5.What’s the key of the training?
A.Making the rats explore actively.
B.Increasing the difficulty gradually.
C.Linking behavior and rewards.
D.Exercising rats sense of smell.
2
6.What can be inferred from the training process?
A.Rats can find out tea eggs with hair.
B.All rats perform perfectly.
C.Real landmines aren’t used in training.
D.The training won’t stay the same.

7.Which is the best title for the text?
A.How I Train Rats to Find Explosives
B.Why Giant Rats Can Be Useful
C.How Rats Contribute to Life-saving
D.Why We Use Clickers to Train Rats

The impacts of smoking on the immune system remain long after a smoker’s last smoking, according to a
study. The analysis is part of an effort to determine why immune responses vary so widely from person to person.
In addition to cigarette smoking, the study found that having a higher-than-average body mass index(体重指数)
and having previously been infected with a typical virus called cytomegalovirus(CMV,巨细胞病毒)also affect
the immune response.
Biologist Saint-André and her colleagues analysed blood samples and questionnaires collected by the Milieu
Intérieur Consortium from 1,000 healthy people who live in Brittany, France. The researchers exposed the blood
samples to microorganisms, viruses and so on known to activate the immune system. They then gauged the effect
of them on the production of proteins called cytokines(细胞因子), which regulate the body’s inflammatory(炎
症的)responses.
The authors combined these results with information about 136 personal traits drawn from population studies,
environmental and clinical data. They found that three factors stood out as having particularly strong associations
with cytokine responses: cigarette smoking, body mass index and previous cytomegalovirus infection.
The data on cigarette consumption were particularly striking; the effect of smoking on cytokine responses was
as large as the effects of age, sex and genetics. And these effects remained for years after participants had given up
cigarettes.
But the study still needs to be repeated to ensure that the results are convincing, says Saint-Andre. And. in
future, it should include a more diverse group of participants. The team has now expanded their study to include
participants from Senegal and Hong Kong, she says. The researchers have also gone back to the original
participants, and have collected fresh blood samples from 415 of them 10 years after the original samples were
taken.
“
It would be valuable to learn more about how smoking influences immune cell function, and. in turn, what
the body’s responses to infection are,” says professor Luo. “That could offer valuable insights into the broader
health consequences of smoking.”
2
8.How did the researchers identify the three influencing factors?
A.By repeating the study.
B.By contrasting the personal traits.
C.By referring to studies of other fields.
D.By researching up to 136 people.
2
9.Who might have the worst immune system according to the text?
A.Someone who has quit smoking for many years.
B.Someone whose relatives have a smoking habit.
C.Someone who has a below normal body mass index.
D.Someone who lives with a CMV infected person.
3
0.What did researchers do to ensure the results were CORRECT?
A.They invited more participants of the same race.
B.They expanded their research all over the world.
C.They got on well with the original participants.
D.They restudied some original participants years later.
3
1.What can we know from what Luo said?
A.It is useful and valuable to give up smoking.
B.The result of the study is complete.
C.Smoking has something to do with infection.
D.The study aids to learn the effects of smoking.

Simply put, soul searching means the effort to find meaning and purpose in life. It is about uncovering the
reason for our existence and filling our lives with clear purpose. Though not a medical or commonly used term in
psychiatry(精神病学), soul searching represents a healthy form of self-reflection. From a psychological
perspective, as explained by Natalie Rosado, the founder of Tampa Consulting Place, soul searching is a “deep
introspective(好内省的)process through which an individual tries to gain insight into their deepest thoughts,
emotions, values, and beliefs”.
People who do soul searching might do so to face unresolved conflicts, gain a better understanding of their
identity, and deepen their connection with themselves and others. It plays a vital role in personal growth. By
questioning established patterns and looking for change, one creates room for improvement.
Journaling is a valuable way for soul searching. Writing about daily experiences, thoughts, and emotions can
clarify one’s feelings and motivations, revealing patterns or conflicts that need attention. Additionally, journaling is
generally beneficial for mental health. A 2022 study showed that it reduced anxiety by 9%, PTSD(创伤后应激障
碍)by 6%, and depression by 2%.
We know that soul searching can be challenging at times. “Soul searching can be tough, and that’s completely
normal and okay,” Rosado says. It’s valid to feel that things are hard and that you’re not making much progress.
Many people also end up feeling confused or overwhelmed. Rosado emphasizes the importance of being patient
with oneself, “There is no immutable timeline for soul searching, and going at your own pace can help you move
forward smoothly.”
“
There are several ways to put soul searching into daily life, such as keeping a journal, taking long walks in
nature, and undergoing treatment. It can also be a natural part of your routine.” Rosado suggests seeing this process
as something natural and organic rather than something forced. Being mindful of your values and true self naturally
leads to personal growth. Having an attitude of discovery and introspection is positive and can motivate you to
become the best version of yourself.
3
2.How do people make progress by soul searching?
A.By dealing with difficulties.
B.By building their identity.
C.By interacting with others more.
D.By challenging existent patterns.
3.Why is journaling good for self-reflection?
3
A.It develops a regular habit.
B.It represents the true feelings.
C.It records prioritized issues.
D.It lowers the level of anxiety.
3
4.What does the underlined word “immutable” mean?
A.Fixed. B.Complex.
5.What can be implied from what Rosado says in the last paragraph?
C.Detailed.
D.Crucial.
3
A.Soul searching may consume patience.
B.Being close to nature is a part of life.
C.There are ways to refer for soul searching.
D.Personal growth requires correct values.
